Peru is the third largest country in South America, after Brazil and Argentina, and is one of the 20 largest countries in the world. It has 200 sea miles and territorial rights over a 60 thousand hectares in Antartic. Peru is divided into 24 departments plus the constitutional province of Callao. Lima is the capital.
LANGUAGES
Peru has a multitude of native languages, testifying to its rich culture. Although Spanish is the most common language, Quechua is a very important inheritance of the Inca and in many regions of the country it is the people's native language. There are also other languages such as Aymara, spoken around Lake Titicaca, and many diverse Amazon languages. At this time there are about 15 linguistic families and 38 different languages.
CLIMATE
Because Peru is located in the Subtropical region, the average temperature varies between 14 and 27 degrees Celsius. On the coast the climate is hot and humid with temperatures between 12 and 27 degrees Celsius. In the mountains the climate is cold and dry with average temperatures between 9 and 19 degrees Celsius. The jungle is hot, humid and tropical with temperatures between 25 and 28 degrees Celsius. You can visit Peru any time of year.
POPULATION
Peru is a country with many ethnic groups. Because of its history, many cultures and races met in Peru. In addition to the native populations, the Spanish arrived about 500 years ago. The product of this meeting, enriched later by the immigration of Africans, Asians and Europeans, is the Peruvian - representing a nation whose rich ethnicity is its most important characteristic. According to 1998 statistics, the population is about 25’662,000 persons. Of these 72.3 percent are urban residents and 27.7 percent are rural.
MONEY
The official money of Peru is the New Sol (S/.). The US Dollar is accepted in many stores, restaurants and service stations. The great majority of commercials establishments accept credit cards such as Visa, Master Card, Diners and American Express, as well as travellers checks.
FOOD
The Peruvian kitchen offers a great variety of plates typical of the coast, the mountains and the jungle. Ask first about the preparation and you learn that some plates are spicy and others are rich with other condiments. Also, there are establishments that prepare international food. You must try Pisco Sour (Peruvian grape brandy), chicha morada (from red corn) and chicha (alcoholic corn drink).
TIPS
Nearly all restaurants automatically include a 10 percent service charge, but the custom is to give between 5 and 10 percent more.
In Peru the amount of the tip is variable and depends on satisfaction with the service.
SHOPPING
In general the stores, commercials centers and artisan markets are open every day between 9:00 am and 10:00 pm. Offerings include high quality art work in gold, silver and copper, as well as textiles of alpaca and cotton, rugs, pottery, wood carvings, etc.
